Five Beautiful Spiritual Quotes about Transformation
March is here! For those of us in the northern hemisphere, this is the month where our dark and weary, wintery world begins it annual transformation to the brighter days and greener landscapes of Spring.
From the flowers and tree blossoms that appear on tiny dormant buds to the caterpillars that emerge from drab cocoons as butterflies with glorious wings, this is nature’s most welcome and anticipated transformation.
One online dictionary defines transformation as “a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance.” It’s a beautiful concept when this type of change is expected. We embrace transformation. We let go of what’s left behind, and look forward to what the newness that change has to offer.
However, when the change is unexpected, especially when it involves trauma of some sort—sudden illness, loss and grief, etc.—it’s extremely difficult to get past our pain and suffering to see anything positive about the change. But that’s exactly what needs to happen in order for us to not only move forward, but also to grow and heal.
According to Mark Miller, author of Jolt: Stories of Trauma and Transformation, “many leap-of-faith transformations begin with unforeseen traumatic life events.” Those who stay in the darkness of the pain, rarely are able to move forward, sadly. But those who choose to use the pain and suffering as fuel—as an opportunity to look at their lives and what the trauma can teach them, those are the people who emerge transformed. They not only heal from the pain, they experience unanticipated personal growth as a result, according to researcher Lawrence Calhoun of the UNC Charlotte’s Post-Traumatic Growth Research Group.
